ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) has re-stated that glyphosate does not cause cancer in humans in its scientific opinion published on May 30 – see here. The ECHA Committee for Risk Assessment stated that: “the available scientific evidence did not meet the criteria to classify glyphosate for specific target organ toxicity, or as a carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substance”. The opinion was issued as part of the process of the renewal of glyphosate’s authorization in Europe, which is due to expire in December 2022. ECHA’s opinion has been sent to the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which will carry out its own risk assessment. These two assessments will be the basis for a political decision by EU Member States and the European Commission later this year.
